◊ Preparations for the fireworks display given in Piazza Navona in Rome on November 30, 1729 for the birth of the Dauphin, son of Louis XV, after PANINI Pen and black ink, sanguine, gray wash and white gouache on vegetable paper, partially laid down. Annotated on the bottom left: Dumont le Rom. delineaveit and on a base on the right F Panini 1731. Numerous folds due to a roll, several tears on the left side Sight dimensions: 38 x 87.5 cm In a carved and gilded oak frame with the Arms of France (buchées) topped by the Royal crown (broken) of Louis XV period. Provenance : PONCELET sale, (d'Auxerre), Paris, Hôtel Drouot, March 26, 1873, n°178 (label on the back of the frame). The painting by PANINI dated 1729 relating this famous event is kept in the Louvre museum. A replica dated 1731 is kept in the National Gallery in Dublin. Cochin's engraving (48.3 x 92.3 cm) dated 1735, was his first piece of bravery. It is marked in the margin Painted by J.P. Panini. Drawn by J. Du Mont le Rom. At the announcement of the birth of the Dauphin, son of Louis XV and Marie Leczinska, on September 4, 1729. Cardinal de Polignac, French ambassador in Rome, had a Te Deum given in Saint-Louis des Français on November 20, then, after the Barberi's race on November 26, a cantata after Léonard de VINCI. The festivities ended with a spectacular fireworks display in Piazza Navona on November 30, 1729 (see F.ARISI, Gian Paolo Panini e i fasti della Roma del'700 ", Roma, 1986, ed. Ugo Bozzi, p.101 and cat.199-200 and 211). PANINI's painting was commissioned by Cardinal de Polignac to be offered to Louis XV in 1731.
