60 x 76 cm. Height: 8 cm. Vienna, second half of the 19th century. Bowl base in oak wood. Transverse oval, a scalloped outer rim in silver encircles the flag, which is set in four segments with ivory high reliefs, bordered by narrow twisted triple bands, some finely enameled and set with small box-shaped rubies. Between the four arching segments are four large silver cartouches with foliate frames, each enclosing a high oval bas-relief. The base is drawn in from the edges as a wide hollow, covered with radially arranged ivory bands. At the top edge a wide beaded wreath. The entire ivory decoration references themes of ancient mythology. In the center of the mirror, a transverse oval high relief, which is surrounded by framing silver borders with stone trim, corresponding to the flag borders. Here the "Abduction of Europe" is shown on the bull, surrounded by maenads and a triton, in between mermaid with fish body, in the upper zone winged cupids with horn and torch, as symbols of the successful abduction. The four segments of the flag continue the ancient mythological theme. At the top the sea god Neptune with trident, here also accompanied by tritons, naked naiads, as well as girls and youths riding on dolphins, with velum, fruit basket and cornucopia; at the sides and front edge corresponding narrative continuation of the theme. The composition of the sceneries very varied, the figures finely carved. In the silver cartouches scenic scenes with representations of ancient myths, in the sense of the four elements, such as: "Flight and fall of Icarus" for air; "Aeneas carries his father Anchises from the burning Troy" for fire; "the Flood" for water; as well as "Titan fight" for earth. The framings of the cartouches are also partially enameled and each set with a set gemstone. The large plate was made as a precious, elaborately crafted showpiece of historicism, in collaboration of ivory carving and silversmithing. Moreover, it proved the owners to be connoisseurs of ancient history and arts and crafts, the subject matter and style refer to important Kunstkammer works of the early Baroque period. A. R.
