VIEW OVER THE CANAL GRANDE ON THE PIAZZETTA WITH THE BOTH COLUMNS AND THE CAMPANILE Oil on wood.
31 x 48 cm.
Signed lower left "H. van Lint..."
In the foreground the wide Grand Canal with a three-masted showboat, many small boats carrying goods and some gondolas. In the center, the Piazzetta, situated on the bank, with the two monolithic columns on which are respectively the Lion of St. Mark and the statue of San Teodoro, flanked by the Doge's Palace and the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana. In the background, the dome of San Marco Cathedral and the long, narrow reddish Campanile. Typical city veduta under high light blue sky.
Son of the painter Pieter van Lint (1609-1690), he received his artistic training from the master Pieter van Bredael (1629-1719), who aroused his interest in Roman landscape painting and prompted him to go to Italy. Around 1700, the artist settled in Rome. He worked in the studio of Gaspar van Wittel (1653-1736), the most successful and sought-after landscape painter of the time. Around 1715, van Lint was admitted to the "Schildersbent" of Rome, a kind of local guild founded in 1627 by a group of northerners. Views inspired by the classicism of Claude Lorrain (1600-1682) played a relevant role in his pictorial production, which focused mainly on views of Rome and the Latium landscape. (†) (12901412) (18)
