THE THREE GRACE OIL on copper. 26 x 19 cm. Frame stamped "Gehring/Heijdenrijk". The theme, known and popular since ancient times, was taken up by Jacopo Zucchi, among other painters. A version of the present painting was attributed to the hand of the artist active in Florence and Rome, but there the female figures are shown physically much more voluminous. In contrast, the small painting presented here has an accentuated Mannerist style due to the slenderness of the graces, as well as the clearly recognizable twisting movements of the bodies. Also in the physiognomy of the graces, typical features for Zucchi can be recognized, which suggest an attribution of the work to the Florentine artist. While here Venus, holding the apple of Paris in her hand, her competitor on the right of the picture shows a bunch of grapes instead. In the context of the two vases - on the left with flowers, on the right with flame - a hidden reference to the allegory of the seasons can be discerned. The painter was a student of Giorgio Vasari, his collaborator in the painting of the Salone dei cinquecento as well as the Studiolo di Francesco I in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. From 1572 active in Rome, where he created, among other things, the frescoes for the Palazzio and the villa of Cardinal Ferdinando di Medici.A.R. (13020414) Literature: Cf.
