PORTRAIT OF AN EDELMAN WITH HUNTING DOG OIL on canvas. Doubled. 110 x 86 cm. In carved partially gilded frame. Three-quarter portrait of a young man with a greyhound standing to his left against a darkened background that obscures the contours of the black clothing. The face is illuminated all the more effectively from a light source from the upper left, as is the head of the greyhound at his side, as are the hands, the white collar and the golden pommel of a blank weapon at the belt. The slight curve of the chest is highlighted on the black color background of the robe by rowed silver buttons. The face nobly and intelligently rendered, with determined gaze directed at the viewer. The plump, closed lips emphasize this characteristic. These observations point to a painter of distinction, and Titian's style is unquestionable here. However, the painting application is somewhat finer and more smoothed than we know from the master himself. Here, the "Portrait of a Young Man" ("The Young Englishman", Palazzo Pitti) could be used for comparison, or "The Man with the Glove", around 1520 (Louvre). The painting was probably made in the years 1550/60. The gilded frame is worked in the typical Venetian style. A.R.
