VANITASSZENERIE Oil on oak. 27 x 41 cm. The transience of youth, beauty, art and also the noble sounds of music is the theme here dedicated. A young lute player, shown here in half figure, is held up a convex mirror in which she contemplates herself, but also the skull held by the bearded old man behind her head. Excitedly and in a dismissive gesture she holds up her hand, which just a moment ago was making the strings sound. The mirror frame with adjustable foot ivory, the reflection shows the young girl distorted. On the table a rolled sheet of music. As is known, the exact identification of the painter could not be done until today. Max J. Friedländer (1867-1958), on the basis of comparisons of styles, found the emergency name "Master of Female Half Figures", which is believed to have worked in the southern Netherlands. However, this is probably not a single painter, but a very successful group at the time. One of these painters is probably the one to whom the present picture belongs. A.R. (13020410) (11) Master of the female half-lengths, active between 1525 and 1550, circle of VANITAS SCENEOil on oak panel. 27 x 41 cm.
