THE VICTORY OF ISAA OIL on canvas. 111 x 168 cm. The depiction follows a narrative of the Old Testament, in which God commands Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. On the painting against a dark background in red robe and brown overcoat with long beard stands Abraham with dagger in his right hand and his left holds the head of Isaac by the black hair. He is about to sacrifice his son lying before him on the place of sacrifice, clothed only with white cloth around his waist, when an angel appears to him in a green shining robe with white wings. Abraham turns his face to the angel, who in turn looks at him, and can be dissuaded from his intention. At the lower left edge of the picture the head of a ram can be seen, to which the angel points with his right arm. This ram is then sacrificed instead of the son of Abraham. Incidence of light illuminates especially the face and the right hand of the angel and the ram. For the artist excellent, typical painting with strong chiaroscuro effects. Verso in the lower area horizontal underlay, rest. Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 09 July 2014. Warsaw, The Royale Castle, 1990, no. 28 Gregori 13. Note: Caravaggio's oil painting of ca. 1598 (116 x 173 cm) is in the Piasecka-Johnson Collection, Princeton, New Jersey.
