CHRIST AND THE WIFE Oil on canvas. Doubled. 182 x 230 cm. In narrow modern wooden frame Attached a copy of an expert opinion by Professor Oreste Ferrari, March 1998, Rome. Also enclosed in copy an expert opinion by Maria Letizia Paoletti, February 25, 1990, in which Paoletti, like Ferrari, concludes that this is an autograph work by Luca Giordano, which may have been painted around 1660-1670. Paoletti compares the representation offered here with the painting "Christ among the Scholars" in the collection of Conte Leonardo Viletti, the "Santa Lucia" in the Museo di Capodimonte museum in Naples and, of course, the work "Christ and the Adulteress" in the Museo di Reggio Calabria, which is similar in many respects to the painting offered here. Note: A painting with the same composition after Luca Giordano is kept in the church Pio Monte della Misericordia in Naples. The painter, famous mainly for his frescoes, was the son of an art dealer from Puglia, who also devoted himself to painting. Thus he received his first lessons from his father, while it is generally believed that he was a pupil of Giuseppe José de Ribera (1588/91-1652). Several of his works also reveal his influence, while Giordano's enormously extensive oeuvre shows that he mastered all the stylistic variations of his time. The breadth of themes in his work, in all areas of history painting, religious depictions but also mythological scenes, also shows influences first from the Caravaggists, but later also from the painters Pietro da Cortona (1596-1669), Mattia Preti (1613-1699) or Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). In the pictorial structure of some of his works, the Venetian masters such as Paolo Veronese (1528-1588), Tiziano Vecellio (1485/89-1576) or Domenico Robusti Tintroretto (1560-1635) are also noticeable. (1301021) (3) (13) Luca Giordano, also known as "Luca fa Presto", 1634 Naples - 1705 ibid. CHRIST AND THE ADULTRESS Oil on canvas. Relined. 182 x 230 cm. A copy of the certificate of authenticity by Professor Oreste Ferrari from March 1998, Rome, is enclosed as is an expert's report by Maria Letizia Paoletti dated 25 February 1990. Both experts infer that this is an original by Luca Giordano which may have been created between 1660 and 1670. Paoletti compares the present depiction with a painting of "Christ among the Scholars" held in the collection of Conte Leonardo Viletti, the "Santa Lucia" held in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples and a work titled "Christ and the Adulteress" held at the Museo di Reggio Calabria, which is similar to the present painting in many respects. Notes: A painting with the same composition after Luca Giordano is held at the Pio Monte della Misericordia church in Naples.
