ALLEGORY OF PEACE AND JUSTICE Oil on wood. Parquet. 75 x 107,5 cm. In gilded frame. In a palatial interior, each side with a column and centered in the background the open view of a mountainous landscape with a large building and an obelisk, the meeting of the personifications of peace and justice. Both in antique robes, on the right in red-green clothing with jewelry decorated hair, the personification of peace, behind which in an oval yellow wreath of lights hovers a white dove and which holds in her right hand a branch, probably an olive branch, both symbols of peace. To her left, the personification of Justice in noble, shining robe, who is kissing the other in a light embrace. She holds a large sword in her left hand, symbolizing justice, and standing next to it a large shield. Above both hovering between clouds two putti, one holding a laurel wreath for victory, the other a flower wreath. Painting in the typical manner of the artist or his circle. Rest, partly retouching, partly frame damage. Note 1: Several similar works by the artist exist: such as one of the allegory of worldly love with two women embracing and a flying white dove, but also a painting titled "Allegory of Peace", showing two women in light embrace, sold at auction at Sotheby's, New York, on January 24, 2002. Note 2: The "Allegory of Peace and Justice" was also depicted by other masters; in particular, Maerten de Vos (1532-1603), but also Corrado Giaquinto (1703-1765).
