ANTONIUS ABBAS AND PAULUS EREMITA Oil on canvas. Doubled. 125 x 95 cm. In narrow bronzed frame. According to tradition, Paul Eremita is shown in the foreground sitting under a palm tree and being fed bread by a raven. Shortly before his death, the 113-year-old Paul is visited by Anthony, who, according to Jerome, was already very old at the age of 90 and is depicted with his attributive pig. The latter is said to have asked him to fetch the cloak that Antonius had received from Bishop Athanasios in order to wrap him in it after his passing. Paul's apron may also indicate that he is known as the patron saint of mat weavers. The manneristically camp foreground figure is typical of Fiammingo and appears with different motivation in both male and female. Here the diagonal is motivated by the movement towards the raven, whereas a camped exposed woman in one of the paintings in Vienna (Inv.No. 2360) is just receiving a kiss. Note: The life story of Paul of Thebes (supposedly 228-341 AD) is transmitted in the Vita Pauli primi eremitae by Jerome (c. 347-420 AD). The Antwerp painter was initially a master of the guild in his hometown, but was soon honored with commissions outside his homeland, such as the painting of the Fugger Castle in Kirchheim, Swabia. From 1573, at the age of 43, he moved to Venice to stay permanently and eventually work as a pupil of Domenico Robusti Tintoretto (1560-1635), together with the great master, in the Palazzo Ducale. Among his most important clients was Emperor Rudolf II. Works of his hand in numerous public collections, especially in Venetian churches. His painting style clearly shows the influence of Tintoretto and is therefore also in a certain color and composition relationship with the Bassano circle of painters. Literature: Cf. Jerome, Vita Pauli primi eremitae, German translation by Manfred Fuhrmann, in: Christen in der Wüste, Zurich and Munich 1983.
