CHRIST AS SALVATOR MUNDI Oil on wood. 56 x 43 cm. In fluted partially gilded frame with water chipping. Frontally Christ faces us as a young man with long straight hair and short full beard. A choir mantle with a four-pass, elaborately designed choir mantle clasp underpins his head and corresponds in its four-partedness with the cross on the crystal globe of the world, and in the cross-shaped intersection of the fingers of the hand raised in the gesture of blessing. His head is encircled by a golden nimbus of radiance, which in its rectilinearity contrasts sharply with the cloud forms that obscure the spandrels and emphasize the supernatural appearance of Christ. Note: A comparable painting, strongly resembling ours and of approximately the same dimensions, was offered on September 19, 2015 at Koller, Zurich, under lot 3015 as Master of Magdalena Mansi. Like several other similar Salvator Mundi paintings that went under this name, a correction was made here on the part of the RKD in The Hague, which defines the artist as Southern Netherlands of the first half of the 16th century. As a model may have served a painting by Quinten Massijs, as it is kept in the Koninklijk Museum vorr Schone Kunsten in Antwerp under the number 241. (1300553) (13) Master of Mary Magdalene of Mansi, first half of the 16th century, circle of CHRIST AS SALVATOR MUNDI Oil on panel. 56 x 43 cm.
