The Order of the Crescent, instituted in 1799 at the initiative of Sultan Selim II, is considered as the ancestor of the Turkish orders. Intended to reward foreigners who supported the Ottoman Empire in its battles, it was never awarded to nationals. Composed of four classes, it was attributed for the first time to Admiral Nelson, winner of the French fleet in Egypt.
