Théodore GERICAULT (Rouen, 1791 - Paris, 1824) Resistant horse About 1806-1808 Graphite, pen and brown ink, watercolor, brown wash on laid paper. 13.1 x 17.9 cm Autograph annotation in pen and brown ink, top left: "Daprès nat". Provenance: - Collection of Édouard, Duke of Treviso (1883-1946)1 - By descent, private collection. On the passe-partout dating from the 1920s-1930s, the name "GÉRICAULT" can be read. Authenticity: - This work will be included in the Catalogue raisonné of unpublished and found drawings by Théodore Géricault, currently being prepared by M. Bruno Chenique. This magnificent and sculptural early watercolor, done from life, inaugurates a theme that would be found in Géricault's art from the 1820s onward: the motif of the plasterer's horse. The use of the close-up, the energy of pen-and-ink drawing and the use of blue are characteristic of his aesthetic approach to drawing and will be found throughout his life. 1) On Treviso, a great collector of Géricault (paintings, drawings, sculptures) and organizer of the 1924 and 1937 exhibitions, see Édouard, duc de Trévise, Jean Guiffrey et Pierre Dubaut, catalog of the Géricault exhibition, Paris, Hôtel Charpentier, April 24-May 16, 1924; Duc de Trévise, "Géricault," catalog of the Géricault, peintre et dessinateur (1791-1824) exhibition, organized for the benefit of the "Sauvegarde de l'Art français," Paris, Galerie Bernheim-jeune, May 10-May 29, 1937; Collection duc de Trévise.
