Warlpiri Group - Yuendumu - Central Desert
This painting represents the Pamapardu Jukurrpa (Flying Ant Dream or Termite Dream) of Wapurtali, west of Yuendumu. "Pamapardu" is the Warlpiri name for flying ants or termites that build large termite mounds. This land belongs to the Nakamarra / Napurrurla women and Jakamarra / Jupurrurla men. The flying ants build mounds of earth ("mingkirri"). When the heavy rains come in the summer, the "mingkirri" flood, the "pamapardu" then grow and fly to build new living places. When they have found their new "home", their wings fall off. At this point they can be picked up, lightly cooked in embers and eaten. When this story is painted, concentric circles are used to represent the ant hills involved in the story, including the central hole of Wapurtali (Mt. Singleton). Dashes are often depicted around the circles to represent the "pamapardu" and the falling wings.
