Dagger - Fan in trompe l'oeil, Japan, 19th century Rare fan dagger called "tanto". Composed of a steel blade and a carved, painted and gilded bamboo sheath, imitating a folded, closed fan. The trompe-l'oeil plumes are made of black lacquer.

N.B. : these trompe-l'oeil fans are more defensive weapons than fans, made on order.
They were forbidden in China as in Japan.
