The Young Child, China, ca. 1850
Folded fan, the double sheet painted on both sides. One on an orange background presents an important assembly in the gardens of a palace attending the audience of a young child in front of a wise man.
The 50 characters are each wearing a costume in silk, and a head with individualized features, in cut ivory*. The other leaf on a blue background presents a central scene animated by seven characters in a garden.
On both sides, symbols of happiness including bats, Phô dogs, and two groups of young women inside lotus flowers.
Rich and refined ivory* mount pierced and engraved on both sides of scholars in bamboo gardens or sailing on rivers. Carved plumes.
