MOREAU DE TOURS Georges (1848-1901) after. "Forward!!! Death of Colonel de Franchessin on August 6, 1870". Important oil on canvas representing Colonel de Franchessin, commander of the 96th Line Infantry Regiment, mortally wounded at the battle of Froeschwiller on August 6, 1870, encouraging his men supported by Corporal Fournier. Signed lower right (illegible) dated 1883 (?), stuccoed and gilded wooden frame. 126 X 100 cm, with the frame 153 X 129 cm. ABE (restorations) FRANCHESSIN (Ernest de). French officer (Talange, Moselle 1824 - Froeschwiller, Bas-Rhin 1870). A student at Saint-Cyr, second lieutenant in 1844, captain in 1854, he participated in the Crimean War, then in the Italian campaign, distinguishing himself in particular at the battle of Palestro, in Piedmont, on May 31, 1859 (victory of the Piedmontese and the French over the Austrians). Battalion commander in 1859, he served in Algeria before participating in the Mexican War. Lieutenant-colonel in 1864, colonel in 1869, he fought in the Franco-German war of 1870 and was killed at the battle of Froeschwiller at the head of the 96th line.
