LITTLE SPANISH TABLE with flaps and pivoting legs
Spain, first half of the 17th century Walnut, light wood inlays
Minor damages
H. 80 cm, W. 40 (closed) / 108 (open) cm, D.83 cm
This ingenious little table rests on eight legs, two of which pivot to support the two flaps that form the finely molded oval tabletop inlaid with light wood diamonds. The central part, decorated with an ermine motif at each corner, opens to a drawer. The front of the drawer is carved with arabesques centered on a scrolled medallion around the keyhole.
The eight uprights are turned in a rosary, ending in flattened ball feet. Six are joined by a fixed strut, arranged four at the corners and two in pivot. The pivoting uprights are linked by two crosspieces to another leg supporting a flap on each side. When the side flaps are folded down, the two mobile legs fit back into the belt and into the spacer.
Modular and elegant, this table adapts perfectly to our interiors and to our current uses.
