MIRROR WITH HATCH AND PAVOT DECORATION France, mid 17th century Gilded brass and repoussé on a wooden core, blackened wood; mirror
H. 57,5 cm, W. 47,5 cm, D. 3 cm
This beautiful square mirror with cut angles presents a rich decoration of floral scrolls in gilded brass worked with repoussé and brought back in plates on a blackened wooden frame. It is cushioned by a pediment with scrolls of tulips and poppies centered escaping from a pineapple. Flowers of poppies and tulips also decorate the perimeter of the mirror.
Mirrors like ours, designed in imitation of Venetian mirrors, appear cited in the inventories of the apartments of 17th century ladies. The Louvre and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris have two toilet mirrors with gilded metal frames and caps. Here, the decoration of poppies, suggests that our mirror was intended to decorate a bedroom.
