ARCHITECTURAL CABINET WITH WITHDRAWAL Lyon, 16th century Blond walnut
H. 189 cm, W. 162.5 cm, D. 61 cm
This beautiful cabinet with withdrawal appears as a piece of architecture decorated with palmettes, with two superimposed bodies, topped by a cornice decorated with palmettes on a row of dentils and modillions.
The upper body is sheltered under the entablature carried by four powerful Ionic columns with fluted shafts resting on a large molded belt.
Bordered at the top and bottom by two braids, it opens with two leaves between three fluted pilasters. The panels are centered by an angel's head sculpted in high relief and flanked at the corners by finely incised roses.
The belt contains two drawers in the shape of a "corbin's beak", between two thick moldings freed by grooves.
Beneath the laurelled torus, the lower body is fluted by three uprights without capitals.
The leaves are distinguished from the previous ones by their central mascaron with the head of an Egyptian, in the manner of Hugues Sambin (fig. 1).
The sides are soberly decorated with panels with recessed frames. On the upper body, the panel is bordered at the top and bottom by ornamental friezes and in the center by an oval medallion with flowers.
