"Les Amours de Gombault & Macée" : The meeting of Gombault & Macée
Scene of village celebrations in the undergrowth.
One sees a piper in the center, a couple of dancers in movement, on the left and on the right, characters observing them. The scene takes place in an undergrowth with lush and rich vegetation. Large border with polychrome flower crowns.
Note the touches of red (mark of quality).
This theme is part of the tradition of pastoral literature, particularly the pastoral novel, which was fashionable throughout the sixteenth century and culminated in France with Honoré d'Urfé's L'Astrée, in 1607.
However, the series of tapestries recounting the loves of Gombault and Macée, generally 8 panels for the complete series, (here the meeting) differs from it by the fact that it continues the story beyond the marriage, until the death of Gombault, and grants a greater place to the realistic elements of the everyday life. Moreover, the representations are especially the texts which are attached to it because sexuality is approached there with lightness and grivoiserie.
This theme was very popular in the 17th century, to the point that it is alluded to in Molière's L'Avare.
