Tiv statue Nigeria Wood H. 95,5 cm Tiv sculptures always have a religious meaning where magic is present. The ancients based their power on the use of witchcraft. The adzov genies are present in all acts of daily life. The statues are not representations of ancestors but of guardians, or akombo fetishes, who protect each family from evil. The large ihambe statues, female or male, are placed to the right of the entrance door of the house of the first wife to protect the family (see François Neyt, 1985).
