Jompré/Goemaï mask
Nigeria
Wood, resin
H. 26 cm
A zoomorphic Jukun mask of relatively small size. The animal's face is made up of several projections organized around a narrow forehead in high relief: two horns at the back curving towards the sky, two pairs of protruding eyes, and a long mouth extending towards the ground. Resin, originally used to fix tree seeds, covers part of the surface. (See Art of the Benue River Valley, pp. 313-341.)
