Makonde Belly Mask Mozambique Wood H. 45.5 cm Female body masks were an important part of initiation rituals. They represent a young pregnant woman and were usually carved with a swollen abdomen and full breasts, decorated with scarification. The body masks were always worn by a male dancer masked by a matching female face mask.
