Ijo animal mask
Nigeria
Wood
H. 84 cm
The Ijo along the coast live from fishing, those inland from hunting, freshwater fishing and agriculture. Most of the rituals are addressed to the nature spirits, most of the shrines are dedicated to them and almost all the masks and carved figures represent them. The Ijo of the central Niger Delta create crests representing amazingly realistic animals. Dancers may embody land animals such as buffalo, leopard and antelope.
