Koro cup
Nigeria
Wood, vegetable fibers H. 42 cm
Cup representing a female anthro-pomorphic character with a stylized body, her abdomen opening into a cavity in the shape of an eight. Plant braids adorn her neck and left arm. The head was originally entirely covered with red abrus seeds. According to Roy Sieber: "This type of cup was used during ceremonial sacrifices and second funeral rites, to drink beer or palm wine." According to Marla Berns and Richard Fardon: "This double Gbene bowl, is used as part of funeral celebrations or masquerades, and allows two people to drink at the same time."
