Sio Hemis Katsina Tabletta
Hopi, Arizona, United States
Wood, fiber, cardboard, pigments
H. 45,5 cm - L. 38,5 cm
Provenance :
- French private collection
This carved and painted element was part of a Hopi dancer's costume and adorned the top of his mask. This dancer personified the Kachina spirit of the New Corn (Sio Hemis Katsina).
Note the beautiful iconographic composition made up of geometric motifs, symbols linked to clouds (circular cutouts at the top), rainbows and rain. The front side shows germination motifs (yellow corolla), the back side two figures of birds in motion, an atypical motif full of poetry.
