A TIFFANY & CO SILVER PLATED BOX, of classic design, with wood lining, possibly cider, engraved to the hinged lid; unusual engraving in that it is written backwards. The address: 535 West 57th Street, New York was built in 1929, and was at first the home to The American Women’s Club which would become known as The American Women’s Association. The club was founded by Anne Morgan; daughter of J Pierpont Morgan, she used her huge inheritance to advance causes of social justice amongst which was the advancement of the working woman in society. She called the AWA ‘a training school for leadership, a mental exchange’ where women ‘can hear what other women are doing’. At one time the organisation had 61 doctors, 16 lawyers and 939 teachers, and many workers in other fields as its members. The Hotel Pierre also mentioned in the inscription first opened its doors in 1930 and is to this day a ‘quintessential monument to New York City’.
