Famous and beautiful edition illustrated in first edition with 100 hors texte compositions by Gustave Doré, woodcuts by Bellenger, Doms, Gusman, Jonnard, Pannemaker, Pisan and Quesnel. There are also two portraits in medallion, of Michaud on the first title and of Gustave Doré on the second.
This work is the penultimate major publication illustrated by Gustave Doré who returned to his favorite themes: war, the Middle Ages, religion, horror and exoticism, which he treated in a more epic style than before.
A very nice copy in a publisher's binding signed by Magnier's workshop, very well preserved despite some minor wear and tear. Scattered foxing.
