Paris : Perrotin, Garnier frères, 1844. - Large in-8, dark green half-chagrin, double gilt fillet framing the boards, ornate spine, gilt edges (period binding).
A very fine edition illustrated with numerous woodcuts, lettering and endpapers, and 55 plates out of the text, in first edition, of which 21 are steel engravings, including the frontispiece, and 34 woodcuts, after Édouard de Beaumont, Louis Boulanger, Tony Johannot, Charles François Daubigny, Aimé de Lemud, Ernest Meissonier, C. Roqueplan, de Rudder, Steinheil, etc.
The title is in first printing, with the English fillet below the mention "Engraved by the most distinguished artists". Plates 20, 25 and 46 do not bear the name of the printer.
According to Carteret, this publication "may be rightly looked for as the prototype of the great text illustrated by the artists of its time".
A good copy in contemporary binding. Some wear and tear to the binding. Minor scattered foxing.
