First French edition, dedicated to Frederick William, king of Prussia, in the translation of L. de Bauclas. It is illustrated with a portrait of the author, the engraved title in English, dated 1837, 70 engraved plates by William Henry Bartlett and William Brockedon, as well as a folding map.
A very fine copy in a publisher's binding decorated with special gilt irons, representing two historiated scenes, two trophies of arms and in the center a medallion held by two bearded men, inside which appears a candlestick surrounded by a star and the Latin motto "Lux lucet in tenebris".
A very well preserved copy despite some wear and tear. Scattered foxing.
