Biedermeier style chest of drawers. Denmark, ca. 1840. Mahogany palm. Measurements: 85.5 x 84 x 46 cm. The chest sits on four square legs, and consists of a total of four drawers with unadorned metal profile locks. The bottom drawer has a rough design, the two middle drawers have a curved front finish topped on the upper sides by two darker toned corbels with vegetal motifs, and the top drawer holds the plain top. The delicate amber tone and the attractiveness of the wood grain, as well as the simplicity and elegance of the design are undoubtedly the main values of this Biedermeier style chest of drawers, a style developed in the 19th century in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Central Europe that is characterised by its sobriety and in which functionality is synonymous with beauty.
