British watercolorist born in Preston Oxfordshire, son of Reverend Charles Conybeare, Crawford John Markland Conybeare joined the Royal Navy in 1867. Participating in several British expeditions in the Arctic, notably in 1875-1876 aboard the Discovery, he brought back numerous watercolors from his long voyages, which have become very rare.
