French painter born in Paris and died in Nice, student of Bertin and Hersent, Defer came to settle on the French Riviera shortly after the Attachement, first in Monaco, then in Nice around 1863. He painted some of the most beautiful views of the Principality in the 19th century, paintings that can be found today reproduced in numerous art books or posters.
