BOULLET Jean [Paris, 1921 - Algeria, 1970], French painter, draftsman, illustrator, film critic and writer. Rare correspondence of Jean Boullet of 20 letters on squared paper, a drawing and 5 postcards, addressed to his friend Hayem Sassoon, from February 13, 1970 to his last letter of September 4, 1970 the month before his death. Jean Boullet was found hanged on October 24 and the circumstances of his death raise many questions. We cannot quote everything, here are some of the last letters sent from Algeria: Tebessa, July 4; 2 pages in-4°. "We who hate so much this ignoble and bloody War of Algeria, what a strange situation to be there for the year 8 of its independence, to see flags, parades and crowd in jubilation! July 27, 1970; 4 pages in-4°. He has a vague plan to leave Algeria and go either to Morocco or to Rome. "That would give me the possibility of a life closer to our freedoms in Paris, London, Rome or Teheran. He talks about Slam: "I respect Islam and the Arabs as few people do, but what I hear here daily about long hair, about the use of an ordinary pocket comb ("it's good for women"), about mini-skirts, etc., makes me despair in the mouths of people I would like to be perfect, so much do I respect them and see as they do. August 2, 1970; 8 pages in-8°. "I am still in Tebessa for lack of having found at the same time, at the same time, the housing and the means of transport for Annaba"... Annaba, September 4, 1970; 6 pages in-4°. "I discover with amazement that the big Moorish café which faces the Djilali brothers establishment is called the "Café de la Quiétude" (sic). There are really things that one cannot invent! [I don't dare tell you to come and see me here - the current context is so "raw" and stupid that I myself sometimes have difficulties. While everyone knows that I am a convert to Islam, a Muslim and that I am beginning to speak Arabic. Just yesterday I was obliged to have the police arrest a young 17 year old, son of a shopkeeper, who when he was drugged with chira, was stirring up the people in the street, in the cafes against me, shouting that I was a Jewish spy!"... Annaba, September 4, 1970; 6 pages in-4°. Interesting and last known letter in which he describes the region of Annaba "the whole city is daily international and high standing. It changes me from the veiled men, women and scorpions, and the sandstorms known in the South a few months ago. Attached is a drawing of an Oriental woman on a carpet, 7 invitation cards to an exhibition at the Scherel Gallery from July 3 to 10, 1948; 2 invitations to his exhibition "J'ai vu en Afrique", Sunday, February 9, 1947; "Oedipe", published in 1947, in sheets; "La Belle et la Bête" with a frontispiece by Jean Boullet, by Mrs. Leprince de Beaumont (1946); papers relating to research concerning him.
