Pair of portraits on slate, one depicting the mosaicist Marcello Provenzale, Italy 17th century The unknown author of the pair of oil paintings on slate shows a confident stroke, capturing the psychological depth of the gaze of both figures.
The mosaicist Marcello Provenzale himself can also be identified in the painting with the man in the red coat. This is possible thanks to the evident resemblance between the oval picture and his - well known and widely published - engraving portrait made in 1623 by Ottavio Leoni (Rome, Gabinetto Nazionale della Grafica, 1623, inv. N. F.C. 53031, vol. 50 K49). Wooden coeval frame. Dimensions w. frame 11.8x6.3 in., sight 6.7x5.3 in.
