Circle of ANDREA DI LIONE (Naples, 1610 - 1685). "Pastoral scene". Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. Period frame. Measurements: 62 x 73 cm; 78 x 89 cm (frame). There are few dated works by this artist, so it is only through the different modern attributions that it has been possible to establish his personality. He trained with the late Mannerist painter Belisario Corenzio, although he soon joined the workshop of Aniello Falcone, an artist known for his famous recreations of battles. It was in this genre that Lione achieved the greatest similarity to his master. However, he was also able to enrich his painting with Poussinian classicism and the Neo-Venetianism that prevailed at the time, to the extent that he developed a personality of his own, reflected in his great pictorial freedom. In this way he created a series of landscapes with a refined classicist sense. The Museo del Prado is one of the institutions where the best examples of his art can be found. There are up to four works by Lione in the Madrid art gallery. Some are part of the series of commissions from Neapolitan painters for the decoration of the Buen Retiro palace, although it is also known that at least one of his canvases was in the Alcázar in Madrid before the fire of 1734.
