Baylis, J. de Boffe, Debrett & Boosey, 1795 - 1 volume In-8° - Some marginal annotations in pencil, stain on some leaves including title - Binding of the time in brown half-basin with corners (the latter spotted) - Smooth spine decorated with cold (spidery) - Rare - Duroy de Chaumareys relates the fiasco of the royalist expedition of Quiberon, the capitulation of the young Count of Sombreuil, the promise of General Hoche to spare the lives of the royalists who would give up their arms and the betrayal of this promise (748 prisoners shot, including 627 emigrants or ecclesiastics and 121 Chouans), his reunion with a childhood friend who had become a republican officer and who dictated the answers he would have to give when questioned by the revolutionary court and especially his meeting with a young woman named Sophie [probably Sophie Elisabeth d'Azentrampf, whom he married in 1797] who helped him to escape from the prison in Vannes and to join the English squadron, which would take him back to London Historians have counted only six escapees among the emigrants of the Quiberon expedition who were sentenced to death.
