LEBES GAMIKOS APULIAN RED-FIGURE LEBES
DATE: 330-310 BC.
MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUE: pinkish figulina clay; shiny black paint, white overpainting, modelled by fast lathe.
Lid: slightly oblique rim, horizontal shoulder, elongated fusiform socket ending in a conical appendage.
Vase: with high vertical stick-like handles set on the horizontal shoulder, ovoid body; molded foot.
ADDITIONAL DECORATION: handles and lid fully painted, on the edge of the lid kyma ionic chain of palmettes and kyma ionic on the shoulder, under the handles double palmette open fan-shaped and superimposed between volutes and spirals, connection with the foot spared.
DECORATION: side A: young woman seated right on a chair, with a garland in her hair and a flabello in her right hand; the woman is wearing a pleated chiton, partly covered by an embroidered cloak with a wave meander edge; in front of her an erote facing left, with wings folded on his back, with a short chiton and a bow in his right hand.
Side B: young woman seated on the right on a chair with saber legs and backward; the young woman has long loose wavy hair that falls on the shoulders in ringlets, keeps the left arm resting on the back of the chair and wears a chiton covered with an embroidered cloak and is in the act of conversing with a naked ephebe standing to the right behind her, with the cloak stopped around his neck and a spear in his left hand
