Félicité Robert de Lamennais, born on June 19, 1782 in Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine) and died on February 27, 1854 in Paris, was a French priest, writer, philosopher and politician. Ultramontane at the beginning, Lamennais knew an evolution which made of him a precursor of the liberal Catholicism, the social Catholicism, as well as the Christian democracy. In 1833, he renounced his ecclesiastical functions and published the following year Paroles d'un croyant (Words of a believer) which was condemned by Pope Gregory XVI and marked his contemporaries. In 1848, he was elected deputy to the National Assembly. He died in 1854, while he was still at odds with the Church and, according to his wishes, he was buried civilly. He began by translating The Imitation of Jesus Christ, a famous work of devotion by Thomas a Kempis. The Imitation of Jesus Christ (in Latin: De imitatione Christi) is an anonymous work of Christian piety, written in Latin at the end of the 14th century or the beginning of the 15th century.
