Carved in the round in a stylized manner, this figure of a monkey or meerkat in the walking attitude is quite rare. The eyes, snout and legs are indicated by small circular cavities. Engraved lines indicate the anatomy of the animal.
A similar statuette sold at Christie's NY on December 6, 2007, lot 64, estimated at $4,000 / $6,000 and sold for $7,500.
A Bactrian alabaster figure of monkey or meerkat. Stylized, with a rounded back and in walking position, the truncated arms drilled, perhaps for insertion, the head with a short snout and a horizontal mouth, with dotted circle eyes, a recess on the forehead. Ca. 2nd millennium B.C.
