VOTIVE STATUETTE OF MONKEY OR MEERKAT Bactria, 2nd millennium B.C. Alabaster with partial deposits on the right side of the face and body H. 18.5 cm Provenance Former French private collection, 1980s Private collection from the South of France, acquired on the French art market Carved in the round in a stylized manner, this figure of a monkey or meerkat in the walking attitude is quite rare. The eyes, snout and legs are indicated by small circular cavities. Engraved lines indicate the anatomy of the animal. A similar statuette sold at Christie's NY on December 6, 2007, lot 64, estimated at $4,000 / $6,000 and sold for $7,500. A Bactrian alabaster figure of monkey or meerkat. Stylized, with a rounded back and in walking position, the truncated arms drilled, perhaps for insertion, the head with a short snout and a horizontal mouth, with dotted circle eyes, a recess on the forehead. Ca. 2nd millennium B.C.
