This head, which is made of cast bronze, is of great artistic quality despite its strong formal stylization: it is an applique intended to adorn a large cauldron. It was fixed just under the rim of the vessel, in correspondence with the handles. Behind the bovine head, the plate that attaches it to the vessel is shaped like wings, with finely incised details. Underneath, the motifs of the coat are incised as a reminder of those on the forehead of the animal. Very good preservation.
An Urartian bronzebull-head cauldron attachment. In the form of the head of a winged bull, the large horns curving upward, the ears projecting horizontally, with a mass of wavy hair along the poll, the round eyes under heavy arching brows, the hair a mass of waves on the back of the neck, with ringlets along the sides, the narrow face flaring into a wide nose and mouth, the preserved wing with a series chevroned feather. Very good conservation. 7th century B.C.
