IMPORTANT RING WITH TWO CROSSES Byzantine art, 5th - 7th century Gold and cabochon-cut garnet Internal diameter 3.8 cm; 23.6 g Provenance Former private collection, acquired in 1970-1980 Then by descent, private collection, 1998 An important Byzantine gold ring set with a large cabochon garnet. The massive hoop rounded within and pointed without is flanked with two crosses. On top, the large oval gold box is set with a beautiful vivid red garnet and also flanked with two flatten beaded cross motifs. These elements enhancing the religious aspect of the ring is typical of the byzantine elite jewlery. Ca. 5th - 7th century A.D.
