AN INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTING OF A RULER AND SERVANT India, 18th century. Gouache and gold on paper. Depicting a ruler seated in a palace garden on a throne, richly adorned with pearls and jewelry, wearing a finely decorated festive attire, a halo around his head. Behind him a servant holding a whisk. Mounted to a fabric passepartout and framed behind glass. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, very few worm holes and staining. Provenance: American private collection. Estates of William R. Appleby (1915-2007) and Elinor Appleby (1920-2020), longtime donors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Mrs. Appleby had a particular interest in Asian art, and she and her husband supported the Department of Asian Art as well as the Fund for The Met, providing for important acquisitions and institutional initiatives.
