A BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN ‘FIGURAL SCENE’ LOBED DISH, KANGXI
China, Kangxi period (1662-1722). The lobed shallow sides rising from a short, tapered foot to a broad everted rim, painted in underglaze blue to the interior with a several figures, one on horseback and another in a carriage, in front of a willow tree under neatly scrolling clouds with trees and hills in the background, encircled by lappets enclosing butterflies and flowers growing from leafy stems against alternating diapered grounds, the recessed base with an early Kangxi mark.
Condition: A segment of the rim (ca. 19 cm long) has been reattached with hairlines visible, a small chip to the rim with associated hairline and a second, larger chip to the exterior rim, some minor fritting to rim as well, some firing flaws.
Provenance: From an old family collection in Pressburg, Austrian Empire, Slovakia, and thence by descent to the present owner.
