GRASSET DE SAINT-SAUVEUR (J.) and MARECHAL (Sylvain): Tableaux de la fable ou nouvelle histoire poétique des Dieux, demi-Dieux, etc...Sans nom, 1787. In-32 contemporary marbled calf, smooth spine decorated, gilt fillets on the boards, gilt edges (qq rough repairs to the binding). Rare edition of this work where the author expresses his ideal of an egalitarian society, based on a community of goods. It is illustrated with 14 beautiful and fine engravings in colours by Mixelle. Pierre Sylvain Maréchal is a French writer, poet and pamphleteer. Political activist, he was the companion of Gracchus Babeuf, precursor of communism. Wanting to free man from all servitude, Sylvain Maréchal, "the man without God", is undoubtedly one of the most fervent supporters of atheism during the Revolution. The publication of this work will include a total of 8 volumes and will be spread out from 1785 to 1787.
