First edition of 1844 with relay titles dated 1845, of this long novel by Balzac. Titles rebound, tears on the edge of several leaves, restored tears to the leaves of the second volume, book 20. Partly first edition of the first series of the "Études de mœurs du XIXeme siècle". Volumes 2 and 3 are marked "Third edition", volume 3 is dated 1834. A good copy in contemporary binding, from the library of Eugène Scribe, with his bookplate. Volume 2 has the two announcement leaves at the end. The fourth volume is missing. Rare spotting.
