MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT autograph "Darius
Milhaud", 4th Concerto for piano and orchestra (1949); 107 pages folio (38.5 x 28 cm; small tears to 1st leaf, and small marginal tears to a few leaves).
Orchestral score of Milhaud's Fourth Piano Concerto.
This Concerto was commissioned by the pianist Zadel SKOLOVSKI (1916-2009), to whom it is dedicated. Milhaud composed it in Mills and Santa
Barbara from May 12 to June 23, 1949. "Doris Monteux sent me to Mills an excellent virtuoso, a young pianist, Zadel Skolovski, who wanted an unpublished piece for piano and orchestra. I composed my
Fourth Concerto for him. He played it several times and recorded it under my direction in Paris the following winter" (Darius Milhaud, Ma vie heureuse).
The premiere was given in Boston by the dedicatee, with the Boston
Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Charles Münch, on March 3, 1950. It is the composer's opus 295, which was published by Heugel.
A work of high and expressive virtuosity, this 4th Concerto "accumulates without respite avalanches of sixteenth notes. The slow movement is interesting, with its very slow trombone themes and its somewhat scowling expression. The whole thing is imbued with a certain huffiness" (Paul Collaer).
This manuscript of the orchestral score is notated in black ink on 24-line Independent Music Publishers' Maestro fine paper; it is signed and dated at the end "Santa Barbara August 16, 1949", with the "Total duration 18''45". The orchestra is composed of: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, timpani, percussion (the copy of the percussion part is attached to the manuscript), 2 harps, and strings. The work consists of three movements:
I. Animated;
II. Very slow;
III. Joyous.
