Rosa BONHEUR (1822-1899) Little Basque shepherd Oil on paper mounted on canvas. Signed lower left, bears a number 720 upper left. On the back stamp of the sale of the workshop of 1900. 32 x 28,3 cm Provenance: sale of the Rosa Bonheur workshop, Georges Petit gallery, Paris, 1900, N° 667 ? (different dimensions: 37 x 27 cm); Drouot sale 29 November 2002, lot 45. Study for the painting in the Château de Chantilly, Shepherd of the Pyrenees (1864). Oil on canvas, 68 × 100 cm, Musée Condé, Chantilly. "The Duc d'Aumale commissioned this painting in 1864 for the Duchess of Aumale. The Countess de Ségur acted as intermediary between the artist and the prince, who was exiled in England at the time. The duke and duchess were so pleased with the painting that he doubled the price agreed with Rosa Bonheur from 5,000 francs to 10,000 francs. By Subsequently, Rosa Bonheur was invited to lunch at Chantilly in 1894 with Ernest Lavisse and Auguste Cain. (Condé Museum commentary).
