Larciani, called Master of the Kress landscapes, Virgin with Child reading with a fruit bowl, doubled panel, old restorations 81,5 x 61,5 cm - 321/8 x 241/4 in. PROVENANCE Paris, collection Siriez de Longeville BIBLIOGRAPHY F. Zeri, "C. M. Kauffman: Victoria and Albert Museum. Catalogue of Foreign Paintings. I, Before 1800, London, 1973", in Antologia di Belle Arti, 7-8 December 1978, cited p.320, reproduced fig. 11 (Brescianino) Our painting is listed in the Fototeca Zeri under card number 36758 (Attribution by Roberto Longhi: Piccinelli Andrea, known as Brescianino). Around three landscapes from the Kress collection (Washington, National Gallery of Art), Federico Zeri has assembled a coherent corpus of works dating from the first quarter of the 16th century in Florence, which are inspired by the compositions of Granacci and Fra Bartolomeo and in which we can also guess the stylisation of paintings by the young Rosso. In 1998, Louis A. Waldman was able to identify the author of this group with Larciani, mentioned in documents and a contract in 1521. We find in his paintings a fluid brushwork, a particular way of describing landscapes.
